Every year, the same thing happens in Louisville pet care. Halloween decorations come down, and almost overnight my calendar starts filling with requests for the weeks around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Families are flying out of SDF, driving to see relatives in other states, or hosting a full house and needing a quiet place for the family dog. If you already know you will be traveling this season, the most helpful thing you can do for your dog is plan early.
This article focuses on dog boarding for the two busiest stretches of the holiday season. If you are still deciding between boarding, drop-ins and house sitting, my guide to booking the right holiday care before your travel dates fill up compares those options side by side. And if you want a feel for what a cozy winter stay looks like, read about winter holiday dog boarding in Louisville.
Why Thanksgiving and Christmas Boarding Fills Up First
Home-style boarding is different from a large kennel. Instead of rows of runs, dogs stay in a home environment with room to relax, play and keep a familiar routine. That kind of care only works when the number of dogs stays manageable, so there is a natural limit to how many stays can be accepted at once.
Holiday travel also tends to cluster around the same few days. Many families leave the Tuesday or Wednesday before Thanksgiving and return on the weekend. Christmas travel often runs from just before December 24 through New Year's Day. When a large share of Louisville and Kentuckiana families want the same dates, the open spots for those days go first.
Booking early does not just protect your spot. It also gives your dog the best chance at a smooth stay, because there is time to share routines, ask questions and handle details before the holiday rush begins.
How to Reserve Holiday Boarding Dates
Every booking starts in Time To Pet, the client portal I use for scheduling, care instructions, communication and visit reports. New clients need to complete registration before requesting services. Registration is where you add your dog's profile, feeding instructions, medications, veterinarian information and emergency contacts.
Once your request is accepted, the payment terms on my client policies page apply:
A 50% deposit holds future dates.
Full payment is due before care begins.
Short-notice and single-day requests are paid at booking.
Cancellations do not automatically create a refund, and credits are handled case by case.
Because the deposit is what holds your dates, requesting early and completing your deposit promptly is the clearest way to secure your Thanksgiving or Christmas stay. Current boarding rates are listed on the dog boarding service page, and final pricing, availability and applicable policies are confirmed during booking. If you are wondering about holiday availability for specific dates, reach out and ask before you finalize your travel plans.
A Simple Holiday Boarding Timeline
Every family's schedule is different, but this general timeline helps keep holiday boarding stress-free:
As soon as your travel dates are set
Complete your Time To Pet registration if you are new, then submit your boarding request with your drop-off and pickup dates. If your plans are still flexible, mention that in your request so we can talk through options.
A few weeks before you leave
Review your dog's profile and make sure everything is current: feeding amounts, medication instructions, behavior notes, vaccination records and your veterinarian's contact details. Honest behavior history matters. Pets need to be safely manageable in a shared, home-based setting, so let me know about anything new, such as resource guarding, fear of loud noises or changes in how your dog gets along with other dogs.
The week of your trip
Pack your dog's food (food is provided by the owner), medications in their original containers and any comfort items. My boarding and daycare guide walks through what to bring. Confirm your drop-off time in Time To Pet.
Drop-off day
Boarding drop-off and pickup are appointment-only and take place at the front door. Clients do not enter the residence. For privacy and safety, the address shown on Google is outdated, and your drop-off address and arrival instructions are provided after a deposit is received.
Why Home-Style Boarding Helps During the Holidays
The holidays can be overwhelming for dogs even when they stay home. Visitors come and go, doors open constantly, and rich foods sit within reach on coffee tables and counters. For some dogs, a calm boarding stay is actually the gentler option.
During a home-style stay, dogs can expect:
A cage-free environment with room to rest and relax
Supervised socialization and playtime
Unlimited potty breaks and secure, supervised outdoor time
Personalized feeding using the food you provide
Medication administration when needed
Photo updates and detailed report cards so you can enjoy your trip

Helping Your Dog Settle In
A few small steps make a big difference for dogs who are new to boarding or who get nervous during busy seasons:
Keep the routine familiar. Share your dog's normal wake-up time, meal times and bedtime routine so those can stay as consistent as possible.
Send a comfort item. A worn T-shirt or a favorite blanket can help a dog relax in a new space.
Avoid sudden diet changes. Holiday leftovers and new treats right before boarding can upset a dog's stomach. Our article on the hidden dangers of people food covers which foods to keep away from pets.
Keep goodbyes short and calm. Dogs often take their cues from us. A quick, cheerful drop-off usually helps them settle faster.
What If Your Dates Are Already Full?
If boarding is not available for your exact dates, there may still be options. Some dogs do well with Overnight House Sitting in their own home, and others are comfortable with Drop-In Pet Visits for shorter absences. Availability for every service is limited during the holidays, so the same advice applies: ask early and keep your Time To Pet profile ready.
Common Questions About Holiday Boarding
When should I book Thanksgiving or Christmas boarding?
As soon as your travel dates are set. Holiday dates are limited in a home-style setting, and your dates are held once the 50% deposit is received.
Can I see the boarding space before booking?
Boarding exchanges take place at the front door, and clients do not enter the residence. You can get a glimpse of the home environment and fenced yard on the About page.
Plan Now, Relax Later
Thanksgiving and Christmas should be about time with the people you love, not last-minute scrambling for pet care. Booking early gives your dog a comfortable, home-style place to stay and gives you peace of mind while you travel.
